Kingston Elementary is gearing up for another WONDERFUL reading month! March is nationally recognized as Reading Month, which the National Education Association began in 1997 as a way to get kids more excited about reading. At Kingston Elementary, staff and students will celebrate reading month with an all school book club through One School, One Book (OSOB). Kingston Elementary is one of the 3,000 US schools to participate in the One School, One Book program. Since launching the program in 2002, the book club has gone from sharing over ten popular stories with families to over 150 available stories, with titles including Charlotte’s Web, Stuart Little, Because of Winn Dixie, Runaway Ralph, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Bunnicula. Each family is given a copy of the OSOB selection, along with a calendar of activities including dress up days, trivia questions, special guests, treats and surprises! Find out more about OSOB at readtothem.org.
Students read the book at home with their families while building the habit of reading aloud as a family. Students celebrate the book at school using engaging materials from Read to Them’s Book Resource Page. This strategy builds a bridge between home and school and initiates conversations about the book in the cafeteria, on the playground, and at the dinner table. The program creates school-wide enthusiasm for literacy and increases family involvement. Families and classrooms will both ask: “What will next year’s book be?”
Teachers and support staff have already begun working on decorations and other fun ideas to transform Kingston Elementary School for our month long reading celebration. Many fun details have been considered to bring our first ever, 2023 title to life for our youngest Kingston Cardinals!
STAY TUNED for the big reveal of our 2023 title, coming to your elementary students on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 with a special, school wide assembly. We can’t wait to kickoff this awesome event!
